Jorge Salas Cuzquen • 20 June 2024

Youth leadership training at the Scout Association of Ecuador.

The Ecuadorian Leadership Training (ELT) is a youth leadership training designed for young Scouts between 15 and 21 years old, becoming a flagship programme of the Scout Association of Ecuador. This programme provides participants with key tools and skills for their personal development as future leaders within the NSO and in their communities.

Based on the syllabus of the International Leadership Training (ILT) and adapted to the context and culture of the country, since 2015, it has been offered every year without interruption, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, running in virtual mode. Since its inception, hundreds of young people from different parts of the country have been part of this experience, complementing their scout training in effective leadership through active citizenship and projects.

The ELT focuses on several fundamental aspects of leadership, including effective communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, teamwork and social responsibility. Through practical activities, group dynamics and inspirational talks, participants gain valuable knowledge and experiences that prepare them to face the challenges of today's world. Each edition has evolved into an event by young people for young people, involving outstanding participants within the organising team or as facilitators in the following editions.
One of its strengths is its focus on experiential learning. Participants are encouraged to design projects that they can implement in their local environments as an opportunity to put their leadership skills into practice while contributing positively to their communities. In addition, participants develop a greater awareness of their role in society and commit to being agents of positive change in their communities.

ELT has become a success because of its impact at the individual level, as many of the participants have demonstrated significant personal growth. At the organisational level, most of the young people who have reached decision-making levels and assumed leadership roles have been part of the programme and have been nurtured by the intergenerational dialogue. Finally, at the community level for its impact through the projects carried out in each edition.
