Aotearoa New Zealand: Youth Advisory Group

Jorge Salas Cuzquen • 20 June 2024

Launched in 2018, the Scouts Aotearoa Youth Advisory Group (YAG) is a team of up to 20 young people aged 12-18 across the country. The YAG aims to provide a forum for young people to share their views and experiences with decision makers and stakeholders.

The YAG is a consultative body that provides advice and recommendations on programmes, events, and other initiatives within Scouts Aotearoa better to meet the needs and interests of youth members.

The group is chaired by a young person elected from the YAG members and supported by two YAG Advisors aged 18-35 and the Youth Programme Manager. Membership is a one-year term, with an option for renewal in a second year. Meetings are held digitally every month.

Since its creation, the Youth Advisory Group has provided valuable insights and guidance on various projects, including refreshing the Safeguarding policy, introducing new Better World programmes, deciding programme themes, and giving feedback on designs, resources, events, and training for youth and adults. Members of the YAG have also represented Scouting at many national and international events, including the United Nations General Assembly.

Alongside supporting youth involvement in decision making structures, the Youth Advisory Group has also provided an avenue into leadership roles in other parts of the organisation, with ex-members taking on positions as National Council members, National Advisors, Group Leaders, and mentors of other young people.
