After a year of dedication and collaboration, Omar is concluding his volunteer journey with the European Scout Region through the European Solidarity Corps programme. With 15 years of experience in the Scout Movement behind him, Omar brought passion, energy and a new perspective of change to the Europe Support Centre in Brussels. In this interview, he reflects on his motivations, key learnings and moments that made his experience unforgettable.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and tell us what brought you to the European Solidarity Corps and the European Scout Region?
I am Omar, and I have been a Scout for around 15 years. Scouting has always been a big part of my life. I’ve always been passionate about helping others and contributing to something bigger than myself.
I discovered this opportunity through a friend who shared it. The idea of being part of the Europe Support Centre for a year, combining my skills with something I deeply care about, immediately resonated with me.
I applied, went through the selection process, was selected, and the rest is history.
How did working in an international and multicultural environment influence you?
I have always enjoyed working with people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. During my time at the Europe Support Centre, I had the opportunity to exchange professional experiences and cultural insights.
Beyond the work itself, it was also about building friendships and learning from one another.

Is there a particular moment during an event where you thought, “This is why I’m here”?
One of the most memorable moments for me was working with the Academy 2025 team. I had the opportunity to collaborate closely with the host teams and colleagues from WAGGGS and World Scouting. It was inspiring to witness the collaboration across different parts of the movement.
During the closing ceremony, I paused for a moment and looked around. I saw participants who had arrived as strangers now standing together as friends, connected and inspired, with a spark in their eyes.
What advice would you give to the next volunteer in this position?
Enjoy every moment of the experience and enjoy Brussels. You’ll have the chance to work with an incredible team in a great organisation that supports young people around the world and creates an everlasting impact.
Take every opportunity to experience Scouting on the ground, learn from others, and even try new food.
As Omar closes this chapter, he leaves behind not only his contributions but also the spirit and enthusiasm that defined his year of service.
Thank you, Omar, for your commitment, positivity and dedication, and we wish you continued success on your next adventure, wherever Scouting may take you next.
