The Scout Association of Nigeria brought together more than 30 national leaders in Abuja for a GSAT assessment and strategic planning workshop to strengthen governance, planning, and organisational development. Held from 21 to 24 May, the activities marked an important step in the association’s rebuilding process.

Through the Global Support Assessment Tool (GSAT), leaders reviewed the association’s performance against World Scouting’s quality standard for good governance and best management practices. The assessment covered key areas including governance, strategic planning, Youth Programme, Adults in Scouting, financial management, communications, and public image.

The findings will inform an action plan and feed into the association’s new strategic plan.

The strategic planning workshop built on the board induction held in January. Leaders carried out a SWOT analysis, mapped stakeholders, and agreed on priorities for the next nine years. They also developed objectives, Key Performance Questions, and Key Performance Indicators to support implementation and accountability.

Facilitated by World Scouting, the process was led by the chief commissioner and the chairperson of the national board reflecting a shared commitment to building a stronger and more sustainable future for Scouting in Nigeria.

The strategic plan will now be enriched through wider stakeholder engagement before being submitted to the national board for approval. It will then be implemented through three-year operational plans, with GSAT improvement areas supported through relevant WOSM Services.

The process has helped Scouts Nigeria set a stronger foundation for a more resilient, accountable, and youth-focused National Scout Organisation.
