Dhaka, Bangladesh, July 4, 2024-As the leading global youth Movement equipping young people towards active citizenry, the Asia-Pacific Scout Region held its first Regional Youth Leadership Training in Bangladesh.

“The training provided an immersive experience through eight e-learning modules and 21 interactive sessions. The training prepared them for roles in decision-making at local to global levels," said  Chairperson of Regional Youth Representative (RYR), Ms.Dianne E. I. Villasis.

Here’s what our Scouts learned in this activity:

Developing Young Leaders through Instilling Scout Values

"Youth leadership is a continuous journey nurtured throughout the Scouting experience," stated Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad MP, President of Bangladesh Scouts, during the opening ceremony. "This training is a testament to our commitment to developing the leaders of tomorrow, grounded in the values of Scouting," - he added.

Fostering Youth Participation towards Active Citizenry

Moreover, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Khan, a Member of the Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Committee, emphasised the importance of active youth participation in decision-making processes. "Scouting empowers young people to be active participants, not just beneficiaries. Their involvement in decision-making at all levels is crucial for the future of our movement," he quoted.

A young Rover of Bangladesh Scouts, A.H. Sayman said, “What I really liked and enjoyed here is that I saw youth being involved at every possible phase of this event. I saw the organisers, facilitators, course staff, and volunteers. All of them are RYR of the Asia-Pacific Region (APR) and other youth Scouts and rovers. This made us feel more engaged.”

He added, “During the group discussions, I learned that, unlike some National Scout Organizations (NSOs), many NSOs have a specific committee or body of youth members at their National Headquarters or within the NSO's official structure dedicated solely to youth involvement. Their recommendations are always given eyes and ears. This practise would be wise for every NSO in the APR to adopt.”

Establishing Teamwork through Engaging Activities

Min Kyoung Kim, a college graduate of the Early Childhood Education program and a bright young rover of the Korea Scout Association, flew around 4000 KM from her town to Dhaka to attend this course. Her experience and journey throughout the course echoed the voices of the participants. “I was kinda nervous at the very beginning. There were eight teams altogether, mixing all of us from 17 NSOs. We had no idea who our teammates would be. There was barely any teamwork happening on the first day. From the next day, I tried listening to others first, to know more about their views, ideas, culture, and expression. That surely helped my teammates to manage and cope with the team. I am grateful to my teammates for their active support and consideration,”  she expressed about her first day.

“Being able to share ideas as youth is most important for rovers in the APR. It was fruitful for me. We could explore new ways and ideas through sessions like Intergenerational Partnership, Decision Making & Conflict Management, Scout Life Balance, etc. I think the grasp of Scout Life Balance, and Conflict Management are indispensable and persuasive for scouts and youths,” she remarked while reminiscing about her experience on the final day.

The Youth Leadership Training Course is a significant progress in engaging young people within the APR. It underscores active youth leadership, beyond mere learning to foster friendships and robust networks. This holistic approach enables participants to enhance their skills and abilities effectively.
