The Scout Association of Nigeria held capacity-building sessions in communication and Safe from Harm from 10 to 11 July 2026 and a strategic planning session on the 12th in Abuja.
Facilitated by the World Scout Bureau, the sessions brought together 30 Scout leaders and formed part of the Association’s wider transformation agenda. The initiative aims to build a safer, more responsive, and youth-centred National Scout Organisation capable of delivering high-quality Scouting programmes.
Strengthening communication and visibility

The communication training covered branding, storytelling, internal communication, and crisis communication. Participants carried out an internal communication audit, mapping the platforms currently used by the Association and assessing how effectively they support information-sharing and coordination.
One of the main outcomes was the development of a communication plan to strengthen the visibility of the National Scout Organization and better showcase the impact of Scouting across Nigeria. The Association will also develop additional resources, including a communication policy and crisis communication plan, and undertake a rebranding exercise.
Effective communication plays an important role in Scouting. It connects members, supports coordination, strengthens resource mobilisation, and helps National Scout Organizations demonstrate their impact and position themselves as trusted partners.

Building stronger Safe from Harm systems
The Safe from Harm capacity-building session brought together coordinators from different regions to strengthen their knowledge and skills.
The training covered case management, reporting procedures, and a review of the Association’s existing Safe from Harm structures. Participants also completed a self-assessment of policies, procedures, and implementation practices as part of preparations to meet WOSM requirements.
The session aimed to strengthen the Association’s ability to ensure that all Scouting programmes and activities are safe, inclusive, and supportive of the well-being of children, young people, and adult volunteers.

Shaping the Association’s strategic direction
On 12 July, Scout leaders held a strategic planning session to conclude a process that began in May. The team developed the Association’s 2027–2031 Strategic Plan, which is broadly aligned with WOSM’s Triennial Plan.
The plan focuses on delivering impactful Scouting, strengthening volunteer capacity, promoting youth leadership, advancing safety and well-being, and positioning the Association as an influential organisation.
Together, these initiatives will support the Scout Association of Nigeria in strengthening its systems, improving programme delivery, and creating a safer and more impactful Scouting experience for young people.
