WOSM Services supports strengthening the capacity of National Scout Organizations (NSOs) to deliver Scouting to more young people worldwide. Over the past year, around 80 new WOSM Services consultants have been trained in 13 different service areas to support each of the six Regions.

These consultants are a pillar of WOSM’s strategy to deliver targeted and tailored support across Regions, from helping NSOs to update constitutional policies to revising National Scout programmes. In this month, the Interamerican Region shares how they are working towards building more inclusive communities supported by Adult Leaders as promoters of gender equality.

Strengthening diversity and inclusion through Better World initiatives

Asociación de Scouts de Guatemala, in collaboration with the Interamerican Regional Support Centre, hosted a three-day national Better World Framework seminar at the School Camp San Jorge Muxbal with special participants from Nicaragua and El Salvador.

Participants were trained on a wide variety of topics from Interamerican policies, such as the regional policy on diversity and inclusion, to how to use the HeForShe Action Kit to the implementation of the Dialogue for Peace initiative. Through the training participants learned how to become promoters of gender equality by implementing these resources across their countries.

Alfredo Musse, facilitator of the seminar and staff from the Interamerican Regional Support Centre, said "It was motivating to see so many young people committed to the task of spreading the Better World initiatives and working together for gender equality with the HeForShe Action Kit, as well as developing a culture of peace through the global initiative of Dialogue for Peace.”

Monserrath López, the lead responsible for the Better World Framework in Guatemala, remarked “Everything was carried out according to plan, the quality was excellent throughout the service. We could not be happier with the work and support provided.”

By requesting for support from WOSM Services, the participants were able to discuss issues such as violence, health, identity, education, work and politics and suggest different activities and games that will help Scouts explore how to be champions for gender equality all with the support of WOSM-trained consultants as subject matter experts.

Making use of the HeForShe Action Kit to promote gender equality

The HeForShe Action Kit is designed to help Scouts around the world become advocates for gender equality and commit to become HeForShe champions. The Action Kit was developed in five languages in collaboration with UN Women to encourage Scouts to think about gender-based issues and better understand how they can take action.

The kit is designed for use in all kinds of Scouting activities and environments from hiking to training sessions and can be adapted depending on the age and understanding of young people involved.
