GLB-C11-2024

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of David Berg as WOSM’s Deputy Secretary General, following an endorsement by the World Scout Committee (WSC) to my recommendation. This appointment will significantly enhance WOSM’s organisational capacity, strengthen its executive management, and enrich its external representation.

In his new role, David will be instrumental in supporting our work at the World Scout Bureau (WSB) as we evolve our structure to meet the expectations for the next Strategy for Scouting.

David joined Scouting as a Cub Scout with FOS Open Scouting in Belgium. After completing the youth programme, he volunteered through the association’s ranks at the local, provincial, and national levels eventually joining the national office at the age of 21. Five years later, he became its Chief Commissioner, a role that he would hold until 2010 when he joined Oxfam in Belgium as its Director for Operations in Flanders.

In 2012, David joined WOSM as its Director for Strategic Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation before becoming the Global Director for Organisational Development. He was promoted in August 2019 to Chief Operating Officer where he made significant contributions to the Secretary General’s mandate and provided oversight to WOSM’s global operations to support National Scout Organizations in the areas of education, communications, events, and organisational development.

David’s role as Deputy Secretary General is effective from 25 March 2024. His appointment is in accordance with article XIV 1.g of the WOSM Constitution, which sets out that the WSC appoints the Secretary General and their deputy or deputies following a recommendation from the Secretary General.

As we embark on a new triennium with a new Vision and Strategy for Scouting, I extend my heartfelt wishes to David for continued success in his new role. Together, we look forward to advancing Scouting’s shared mission and making an indelible impact on the lives of young people around the globe.

Yours in Scouting,

Ahmad Alhendawi
Secretary General
