Scouts in Myanmar swiftly mobilised a youth-led humanitarian initiative to support the hardest-hit communities of  the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Shan State and the Mandalay Region. Under the banner 'Scouts in Action: Relief and Humanitarian Aid for Myanmar Earthquake Victims,' the effort delivered critical aid to 152 households—providing essential supplies and emotional support.

In line with the Scouting value of serving others, Scouts around the world take the lead in community engagement and service whenever the need arises.

“Scouting itself is not a humanitarian organization, but whenever there is a need, Scouts rise as humanitarians — guided by heart, duty, and service.”— Phyo Thura Win, Project Manager Scout Leader.

Connecting with Partners to Mobilise Rapid Response
With financial aid of USD 5,000 from World Scouting Emergency Grant, support from some  National Scout Organizations in the Asia-Pacific Scout Region while being supported by a strong network of local partners—National YMCA of Myanmar, YMCA Taunggyi, KGI International School Mandalay, and Better Youth Myanmar—Scouts in Myanmar launched a two-phase relief operation targeting some of the most severely affected areas.

In the first phase, carried out in collaboration with YMCA Taunggyi, Scouts in Myanmar delivered aid to 100 households across two villages in the Inlay Region of Shan State. These communities had experienced complete housing loss and were in urgent need of basic supplies. The second phase focused on 52 vulnerable families in Sintgaing Township, Mandalay Region. Although Scout presence was more limited in this area, the response was strengthened through the involvement of Scout members from KGI International School and logistical support from the National YMCA.

Providing Essential Aid to hardest-hit communities
Each affected family received a relief kits containing blankets, sleeping mats, tarpaulin sheets for temporary shelter, flashlights with batteries, mosquito nets, soap, sanitary pads, and dry food supplies. Beyond material aid, Scouts played a crucial role in offering emotional support—providing not just help, but also hope and solidarity in a time of profound hardship.

Supporting Emotional Recovery
Recognising the emotional toll of the disaster, the project included access to mental health support through the YMCA Counselling Center and the “All Ears” Helpline. These services provided psychological first aid, counseling, and referrals—critical support for families, especially children and the elderly.

After the earthquake, many families faced not only the loss of their homes but also a deep sense of insecurity. This relief project brought them more than just supplies—it restored comfort, dignity, and hope. As Scout Leader Zwe Khaung Tay Zar recalls,

“When we handed them the kits, their faces softened. Some even smiled. In that moment, I realized we weren’t just giving help — we were giving hope.”

Looking Ahead
The Scouts in Action project has strengthened local resilience and set a new standard for youth-led humanitarian response in Myanmar. It proved that when Scouts are called to serve, they answer with action, empathy, and unity. This initiative not only brought emergency relief but also inspired a stronger, more connected generation of leaders ready to face future challenges — together.
