WOSM Seeding Innovation and Impact

Have you been at the WOSM tent (Moot Plaza) already? Lot’s of inspiring global Scout initiaves are presented there! You can get information on the Earth Tribe Movement (including the Plastic Tide Turners) and the Africa Scout Foundation offers a Copper Junior Membership for 10 USD only. The Kandersteg International Scout Centre (Switzerland) is being presented and do not hesitate to get informed about the Dialogue for Peace programme of WOSM and the International Dialogue Centre (KAICIID).

Another inspiring initiave in the WOSM tent is that of the Kenyan Scout Mary Petite. She is one of the 12 young people awarded the global Messengers of Peace Hero in 2019. She won with her ‘Brown Olive Tree’ project’. This innovative project grows seeds of the indigenous Brown Olive Tree which are donated to society. This initiave supports a sustainable society and a better eco-system. The fruits produced are food for birds. The insects get nectar from the flowers of the tree. Livestock eats the leaves and twigs. The tree enriches the humus and thus ground becomes more fertile, more birds are attracted, the trees produce wood and contributes to the the fight against global warming. A seed takes about half a year to grow to tree, so tree planting is a long term project. So far 816 plants have been donated!

Mary says “Attention is key, taking care of the seeds planted is essential. Last year only one tree died. You can plant a million trees in a reforesting project, but if half of it dies during a drought, then time and resources are not well spent.

Interested? Check out the Tree Planting project of Mary Petite at her Facebook profile and await her donation appeal on the Scout Donation Platform, which is soon to be launched.

You Will go Home Happy!

The Moot Camp Chief, Phinehas Muita is happy for the arrival of many rovers in Kenya and welcomes them to the first Africa Rover Moot. “It's a dream come true!”. The program was conceived in a holistic way to give an opportunity to innovate the next steps. So, in these nine days of camp it will be put into practice by all. “We will seek to explore different areas and all participants will have the opportunity to meet people and understand their different cultures. We have teams that have designed adventure and nature activities, among others”, he said.

The programme gives rovers an opportunity to discover innovation in different areas. “It's a good programme and I'm very optimistic that everyone will enjoy it and go home happy and with new friends at an international level”, concluded the Camp Chief.

“The activities are nice, funny, and enjoyable. We went on a nature walk, learned about the plastic tide turners and Scouts go Solar challenges and played water polo.”
 -
Husna Hassan (Kenya)

“The swimming pool is quite fun and warm for many Europeans. It’s fun supporting and ensuring the patrols take part in the activities. It’s my first time as a volunteer at an international event and my first Scout event outside Europe. It’s nice to meet so many people.”
- Stephan Ammann (from Austria but with Lichtenstein contingent)

“Scouts go Solar creates awareness on the use of solar energy. The most exciting part was the quiz buzz that tested my knowledge of solar. It has opened my eyes on the need to conserve the environment.” - Melan Precious (Uganda)

"The Moot programme and the mix of cultures is amazing. I don’t think I have experienced something like this in Scouting before. I like the African drumming and the football because it gets people into a competitive spirit.” - Jared Vamali (Australia)

“I’ve really enjoyed the nature trail towards the stream. I also learnt a lot about the SDGs and am considering working on one when I go back home. The drumming was also interesting.” Thokozani Mkhatshwa (South Africa)
